Dear Millennials and Generation Z,
You need to take a motorcycle trip. I know its dangerous and you were raised in a world where you were told these machines were “donor cycles” or death machines but if you take my advice and mitigate the risk you can enjoy the world in the most amazing and raw way.
You can mitigate risk with training and protective gear. Get a motorcycle safety class, rider training, and don’t cheap out on riding gear.
If you choose to take the step out in faith the reward will be a symphony to the senses by being exposed to the elements. You will smell the food long before you arrive at the restaurant, you will feel the change in humidity from the city to the rural back roads, feel the texture on the road in the handle bars and seat.
Your awareness will skyrocket as you are vulnerable and exposed in traffic. You will become a better driver.
Plan an overnight trip and you will be forced to learn to pack light and efficient.
When you pull up to a gas station, local eatery, or take a rest stop, people will come by and admire your bike, ask about your adventure and tell you about local gems you would have never known about otherwise.
Depending on the type of motorcycle you choose, there will be a community for you. Sport bike, cruiser, adventure, classic bikes and touring bikes all have communities that will welcome you with open arms and will mentor you as you seek new adventures. Tips and tricks will be abundant.
Take the risk and invest in training and gear. Then plan a short road trip. You will be rewarded.
Seek adventure and get busy living.
